What Silk Density Is Available: What Is Momme and Which One to Choose?

Silk fabrics differ in density, weight, and how they feel in use. For natural silk, the momme measurement is commonly used to indicate how light or dense the fabric is. For pillowcases, balance is especially important: the material should be durable enough for everyday use while remaining soft, smooth, and comfortable.

What is momme and what does this measurement mean?

Momme indicates the density and weight of silk fabric. The higher the momme value, the more silk is used for the same area of fabric.

For example, 19 momme silk is lighter and slightly more airy than 22 momme silk, while 22 momme is somewhat denser and heavier. Both are very suitable for high-quality silk pillowcases.

What silk densities are available and what is the difference between 16, 19, 22 and 25 momme?

  • 16 momme – lighter and thinner silk. It drapes well and feels airy.
  • 19 momme – sufficiently dense while still soft and lightweight. It is an excellent choice for pillowcases because it combines comfort, smoothness, and good durability for regular use.
  • 22 momme – denser and slightly heavier silk. It is also an excellent choice for pillowcases and feels a little more substantial.
  • 25 momme – even denser and heavier silk. It can be highly durable, but for pillowcases, greater density does not necessarily provide a practical advantage.

What silk density is best for pillowcases?

For silk pillowcases, both 19 and 22 momme are excellent choices.

19 momme is ideal for those who prefer a lighter, softer, and more fluid fabric. When made from high-quality silk, a 19 momme pillowcase is well suited to regular use and can last for a long time with proper care.

22 momme is slightly denser and heavier. The fabric feels more substantial and offers a little extra density and resistance to wear.

The difference between 19 and 22 momme is therefore not that one is “good” and the other is “too thin.” Both are suitable for high-quality silk pillowcases. The choice mainly depends on whether you prefer a lighter, more delicate feel or a slightly denser fabric.

Does a higher momme mean better silk?

No. A higher momme does not automatically mean higher quality.

Momme primarily indicates the density of the fabric. The quality of silk also depends on the quality of the fibres, the length of the threads, the weave, the finishing, and the quality of the stitching.

For this reason, a pillowcase made from high-quality 19 momme silk can be much better than a 25 momme product made from lower-quality raw material.

For pillowcases, there is no need to choose the highest possible momme value. 19 and 22 momme already fall within a range where silk combines comfort, an elegant appearance, and good practicality.

Does momme affect durability and lifespan?

Yes, it does, but it is not the only factor.

When comparing silk of the same quality, a higher momme usually means a denser fabric and slightly greater resistance to wear. This is why 22 momme is somewhat denser than 19 momme.

However, 19 momme silk is by no means too thin or short-lived. For pillowcases, it is a practical and suitable density designed for regular use.

With proper washing, gentle drying, and careful handling, 19 momme silk products can retain their properties and beautiful appearance for a very long time.

22 momme provides a little extra density, but both 19 and 22 momme are excellent choices for silk pillowcases.
