Alpaca Knitwear Care – A Complete Guide

Why It’s Important to Know How to Care for Alpaca Knitwear

Alpaca yarn is warm, lightweight, and resistant to pilling — but improper washing or drying can easily ruin your favorite piece.
Follow a few simple steps, and your alpaca sweater, poncho, hat, or scarf will last for many seasons.

Can You Wash Alpaca Knitwear?

Yes — with proper care, alpaca handles washing very well.
The fibers retain their shape, softness, and appearance if you maintain the right water temperature, use gentle detergents, and avoid wringing.
Even after many washes, alpaca garments stay beautiful and comfortable.

How to Wash Alpaca Knitwear:

  • Water temperature: Recommended not higher than 30 °C — hot water can damage the fibers and make the garment stiff.
  • Detergent: Use a liquid wool detergent or mild shampoo.
  • Washing: Gently submerge the garment in water and swish it softly. Do not rub or twist the fabric.
  • Rinsing: Use water of the same temperature. You can add a small amount of wool conditioner — it will soften the fibers and fluff the yarn.
  • Drying: Do not wring! Let the water drain naturally or wrap the garment in a towel and gently press to remove excess moisture.

Can You Wash Alpaca Knitwear in a Washing Machine?

  • Machine washing is acceptable only if the care label specifically states that the item is machine washable — for example, if it allows the “Wool” or “Hand Wash” cycle.
In this case, use the wool cycle at a temperature up to 30 °C and turn off the spin function.
  • Do not tumble dry alpaca yarn items.

If there is no special marking, wash by hand. Machine washing without the manufacturer’s guarantee can lead to deformation, shrinkage, and loss of softness.

What to Use for Washing Alpaca Garments: Choosing the Right Detergent

When washing alpaca garments, it’s important to use gentle, delicate detergents that preserve the natural properties of the fibers and prevent felting.

Recommended options:

  • ✔ Detergent gel for delicate fabrics — free from harsh surfactants
  • ✔ Sulfate-free shampoo — a good alternative if no special detergent is available
  • ✔ Products labeled “Wool / Cashmere / Silk” — typically have a neutral pH and include ingredients that soften both water and fibers

Not recommended:

  • ❌ Regular washing powders — they don’t dissolve well, may leave residue, and can overdry the yarn
  • ❌ Products with bleach, enzymes, or strong fragrances — these damage the fibers
  • ❌ Generic fabric softeners and rinses — often contain silicones that build up in the yarn and reduce breathability

How to Dry Alpaca Garments

Even thick and warm alpaca items dry quickly thanks to the natural fiber structure, which wicks away moisture and allows the fabric to breathe. Gently squeeze out excess water by hand, wrap the garment in a terry towel, and press softly to absorb moisture.

  • Lay flat on a dry sheet, away from direct sunlight or radiators.
  • During drying, it’s helpful to gently shake the garment occasionally — this allows the fibers to fluff up naturally and speeds up drying.
  • Once dry, shake again and lightly brush the surface with a soft fabric brush.
  • If needed, steam through a damp cloth without touching the surface with the iron.

How to Store Alpaca Knitwear

  • Always store alpaca garments folded — avoid hanging them on hangers to prevent stretching or misshaping.
  • Use natural moth protection — place a sachet with lavender, cedar, tobacco, or geranium in your wardrobe.
  • Air out your knitwear regularly — every 1–2 months, gently take the garments out to a shaded, well-ventilated space like a balcony (avoid direct sunlight).

By following these simple rules, your favorite sweater, hat, or scarf will stay soft and beautiful for many years to come.
